From our Inaugural Trip in October 2019

General comments

The TechBuzz China Investor Trip was simply outstanding. It would not have been possible for our firm to develop this trip on our own given our lack of network in China and I think this trip was far superior to the more generic trips organized by investment banks.

“If you're an investor looking to get a pulse on the Chinese tech/consumer scene there is no better trip. Rui & Ying-Ying were great hosts, gaining us access to many local companies and business leaders. Highly recommend!”

The trip was excellent and superbly arranged. My assumption is you could attend this trip every year and come away with a staggering amount of new knowledge. Quite seriously, if this trip because a routine event, I would very strongly consider attending every two or three years. It was that good.

“A great way to discover China with a group of thoughtful and curious fellow investors. Very well organized by Rui Ma & Ying-Ying Lu who are great at bridging the cultural gap for North American investors. Highly recommended.”

Wonderful learning experience and phenomenal hosts. Highly recommended!

“I was looking at a way of having intelligent, on ground, insights into the new technology savvy China and its peoples thought process. What is the new China really like?

The trip over delivered on that objective for me. The well planned and executed corporate meetings combined with thoughtful informed speakers and the interactions with fellow participants with diverse backgrounds, but long term thinkers, spread over an entire week, added a unique, comprehensive and multi pronged overview of today's tech savvy China and the thinking of its Urban people and business leaders.

The trip endorsed my view that China's influence in the world, founded on its Technology prowess, remains the most underestimated global geo political and business dynamic a decade or more ahead.

The thoughtfulness, warmth and genuineness of the organisers was evident throughout the experience and is a true differentiator between the usual business trips and those planned holistically with purpose, care and focusing on under promising and over delivering.

Kudos to TechBuzz China and a heartfelt Thank you. Deeply appreciated.”

A trip that will open you mind to a new way of understanding change – as only the Chinese can do at this time. The organization was superb and the quality of the meetings and interaction with other investors made it truly memorable.

“A fantastic gateway to what will hit US in the decade to come!!”

How has your view of China changed? Has this trip affected your investment strategy?

My confidence in my ability to understand developed market China has increased while my awareness of just how out of my circle of competence emerging market China actually is has increased. So more likely to make investments exposed to developed market China and less likely in invest in companies exposed to emerging market China.

“I think I came to China expecting to see incredible drive, intelligence and enthusiasm from local business operators. The trip reinforced my hypothesis, but also concerns me that we're being cavalier with very strong future competitors. Seeing and experiencing helped me right size my beliefs. The trip has given me a lot to talk about and a much more focused interest on how to take advantage of the perceived opportunity. I still struggle on how that could work as an outsider.”

Gained a more nuanced understanding. Beware of media bias from North America. It’s not always as it appears from a Western perspective!

I left with the strong feeling I may be thinking wrong about the world. The trip was enlightening… We may have once called Chinese companies the of China. This is just not true anymore. Everything I saw and experienced has local flavor, a Chinese touch. And that flavor is not what we’re used to seeing. Local companies have adapted to the local needs and customs, they are tapped into local talent pools. They are evolving and changing rapidly thanks to extreme competition. And as these companies tap into local consumers, they are becoming a force to be reckoned with. We, as investors, should look to China and its increasing technological strength and financial wealth as an opportunity.

While Ensemble does not currently have any direct investments in Chinese companies, nor do we plan to make any in the foreseeable future, we think that it no longer cuts it for US or global investors to simply say that China is outside their circle of competence. As investors in global businesses, we know that China’s economy and their thriving corporate sector will play an ever-increasing role in our work… the Chinese economy, Chinese consumers and Chinese businesses will only continue to play an ever growing role in the global system and we’re committed to expanding our circle of competence as aggressively as we can.

It was a fascinating trip, with numerous private and public company visits, as well as insights from many notable guest speakers, including investors, industry experts, government officials and entrepreneurs on the nuances of business in China… Even if you have no interest in investing directly in China, the country cannot be ignored, given its fast-growing consumer market and position as the hub of global manufacturing… While the business mood in China was cautious and more inward looking than in times past, and there will be inevitable bumps along the way as we see today, we believe it is a mistake to be gloomy about China over the long-term.
